The BMW i3 was a game-changer from the start, but the 2017 i3 is poised to shake up the EV market again with an increase in battery capacity and range that is sure to allay even the most ardent worries around range. With a boost of 50% to the battery capacity and 40% in overall range, the 2017 BMW i3 aims to make EV believers out of gasoline stalwarts.
The boost in range comes almost entirely from the use of new Samsund 94 Ah battery cells, which are actually the same size as the cells previously used, so the layout of the battery pack remains largely unchanged. They do add about 100 pounds to the vehicle’s overall weight, but the gains in terms of range far overshadow the slight uptick in weight. The 50% boost to battery capacity translates into 40% more range, taking the 2017 i3 from 81 miles per charge to 114, and that’s amount of range should quiet the nagging voice inside that worries about reaching a charging station before running out of power.
