Are You Changing Your Oil Too Much?

Today's vehicles are more sophisticated than ever. However, with these enhancements comes a little confusion. One thing of the past that seems to be engrained in many vehicle owners is that they must change their oil every 3,000 miles. Truth be told, this can actually cause more harm than good. The oil and engines of today are advanced enough to go an average of 5,000 miles before even considering an oil change. Some vehicles have even been reported by manufacturers to go 15,000 miles without visiting the service center.

The definitive answer is that there is no one "right" answer. Many vehicles will alert you when they need an oil change. If not, it's in the owner's manual. Fewer oil changes and only changing when necessary provides many benefits. Mainly, the environmental impact is much less with fewer changes. Changing the oil too often also causes unnecessary access to the engine, which could cause even more wear on the area. Rick Hill BMW is happy to help with all of your service needs.
